I have been watching video footage of bobbin lace being made and noticed the

and wondered what most of you all do. When I first began making lace I think
I was told about 3 or 4 inches as a norm and must admit that anything other
than 3 feels incredibly short. Most of what I do is torchon though and
wondered if this was the reason, a reasonable number of bobbins in use on the
pillow where this was a tape type lace using less than 10 pairs I think.

I'm a beginner to lace making and so far have only learned torchon. I find the most comfortable distance is about 3-4 inches, although how close I am to the edge of the pillow can make a difference (I use a circular, slightly domed pillow). I certainly don't like less than 3, but sometimes lengthen to about 5.
