Nathalie,
A good source of information on the history of lace knititng is Sharon
Miller's book, Heirloom knitting.
She also has a website
http://www.heirloom-knitting.co.uk/index.html
I have used many of her patterns, they are always a delight.
She has the finest knitting yarn I've found.
I've been making Shetland Lace for many years, and have never found any
suggestion that it was made by people unable to make bobbin lace.
It is, after all, a very different skill and was initially made by women
in the Shetland Isles (and other remote parts of the world) who had
access to wool and needles, and a gift for designing wonderful patterns.
I usually have some Shetland Lace and Bedfordshire lace on the go together.

Also I am on the lookout for information on the history of lace
knitting. I think (though not sure!) that lace knitting started as a
way to copy "real" lace by ladies who could not make "proper" lace. Is
that correct? Does anyone know where I could find more info?
Thank you in advance!
