I have gone back to S10U2 to try a few more things. After Albert told me about the usbsacm driver, which works fine in S10U2, I have decided to give one more try to cardbus in S10. Tried cardbus-0.2 (as it is pointed as the S10-compatible version in the cardbus page) and guess what? It attaches, no deadlocks, and as usbsacm attaches to the usb modem in it (I've switched from the Yiso card to a Kyocera KPC650) /dev/term/0 appears and I can even tip it. I haven't tried pppd yet (out of time lately) but I am confident that it will work. Maybe there's a hint about the deadlocks in here. Just one caveat, however. After I insert the card, cfgadm -l doesn't list a pcic0:slot0 card as the latest Nevada versions, but it shows usb3/1 device that only shows up when the card is inserted. The problem is: I don't know how to eject the card after I insert it. Tried to just hot-unplug without any software commands, but that gives me a kernel panic with a page fault in unix module. More news as I have the time...
