Another update. Up to now, when pppd disconnected I was having to reboot the
machine to get the EVDO card reinitialized to dial again. Now I found a
workaround.
The following steps reinitialize my EVDO card without having to reboot and
without having to remove the hardware (which AFAIK still causes a panic on
S10U2).

1) cfgadm -l -- to find out which usb port is the EVDO card's port -- in my
case, it's usb3/1 (as seen in the steps below);
2) cfgadm -c unconfigure usb3/1 -- apparently does nothing to the device, but
brings cfgadm's internal structures to a state in which the device can be
configured again;
3) cfgadm -c configure usb3/1 -- which really initializes the card and brings
it to the point where I can dial with pppd again.

Yes, I'm finding my way through EVDO on Solaris 10!
