As noted earlier in this thread, I fell back to using the 32-bit kernel just 
because of this driver, so I'm good there.

And as discussed earlier in this thread, for this chipset it was recommended 
that I use the 32-bit XP driver referred to by the NDIS page as being for cards 
identifying themselves as:

(14E4,4328) OR
(14E4,4311)

This driver ends up being from HP, and has filename: sp39243.exe, containing 
Version 7.00 C (8 May 2008) of the driver.

If that's not the right driver to use for this chipset, please let me know...

I'll also try completely disabling NWAM and just doing:

ifconfig bcmndis0 auto-dhcp

But that's a hassle.
