That NetGear NIC uses tulip, IIRC. Do an lsmod at the command line and
see what you have; if any modules say (unused) after the name, they
didn't find supporting hardware and you should try something else.

You'll need to modify network.conf a lot more than that... it's
well-documented internally.

That's dhcpd complaining because you haven't configured it; see packages

what does ip show addr give you after that? eth0 is probably your
ISP-facing address.

Change the order that the modules are loaded.
