A couple of times a day, name resolution would fail. I could still ping the Cox gateway and I could ping everywhere else on the Internet by IP address. Return times on pings to the DNS servers would typically be 500-800msec with a 50-80% packet loss even though it was only 4 hops away. After a while, with no intervention on my part, the problem would resolve. Cox spent a great deal of time blaming my router but eventually when enough complaints came in from people without routers, they assigned someone to look into it and automagically the problem disappeared. The next time this happens, try pinging the DNS servers by IP address and see what happens. If the problem is "DNS fade", they will have to solve it on their end. Regards!
