Oh, forgot to mention one thing.  On my home Win2K box there was one other
variable -- I'm running ZoneAlarm Pro, so there was some chance that some
bug could have been causing it to block the ICMP responses from the Bering
box on the local network (though that's certainly not how it's set up), but
I ruled out that possibility -- shutting down ZoneAlarm and trying again
produced the same results.
