I don't currently have any software set up to do network sniffing (nor do I
have much experience with such software), so doing that would be a lot more
effort than simply writing a post.

Anyway, as I said, the "* * *" on the first hop doesn't really bother me,
now that I know to expect it.  I had noticed the problem but didn't have any
immediate plans to report it.  I just wanted to back up what the original
reporter was saying, since you said you couldn't reproduce it.
