Whilst agreeing that the game is about money, greed and ego (and lets not exclude the supporters from this), I disagree that there is nothing to be excited about - we have the excellent spectacle of Manchesters domination of the premiership wobbling and in Chelsea we actually have the new Leeds - the club everyone loves to hate - skilful, focussed, determined and occasionally brutal - reminds me of the seventies! In Arsenal we have a 'better' football team than any I can remember and in Wenger, Ferguson and Morinho literally hours of entertainment. So the game is far from dead.
Sadly in Leeds we have a total fiasco, but I like Dennis Wise - he is addressing the problems and I think he will succeed given time - that may include a visit to League 1, but I think the ship is turning. Lets inject a dose of realism - the time to bring on the youth is the beginning of a season after a comprehensive pre season, confidence boosted by the thrashing of a couple of amateur teams in Europe. It is not now, in the middle of a relegation scrap. Needs must - we need to fight our way out of the current predicament. I notice Mark Lawrensen suggested in the Daily Mirror that Dennis lacks the experience for such a big job - this is utter bollocks and simply feeds on the collective delusion that Leeds are a big club. We used to be a big club and we have the potential to be a big club again, but we have an antiquated stadium, are in the relegation places for 2007 and have lower crowds than Birmingham. Dennis took Millwall to an FA cup final as a manager and as a player represented England. He understands football and I suspect has the determination and will to win that we need. He has an able deputy in Gus Poyet and anybody doubting their committment has only to watch them during the game - they kick every ball. I don't see doom and gloom - I think the future is brighter than at any time this season.
