A game we should have won.
A game 9 times out of ten we would have won.
Just one of those days.
Cheltenham were sh*t but we could of played for a month and not scored.
Lucas in goal and Parker at left back otherwise same team as usual.
We started confidently enough, passing the ball around at the back
and finding plenty of space in midfield and within a few minutes Kandol had
played Beckford in on the edge of the area, who scooped it over the bar a
sign of things to come.
Parker played well comfortable on the ball and always looking to
bomb forward to support Carole, although most of the time Carole preferred to
cut inside. In fact this was the main problem, we had a lot of possession but
never really got enough crosses in from good angles. Fraser managed some
decent attempts but it never met Kandols head (who was often the only one in
there) and whenever it came over from the left it was just to high for Beckford
who had a couple of headers over.
Cheltenham did nothing, Marques was back on form tidying everything
up at the back and Lucas really had nothing to do. The ball flew across their
box a few times but we only really came close when Beckford turned beautifully
on the edge of the box and crashed a shot against the bar. All in all a
comfortable but not especially inspiring half.
Second half we started strong and forced a few corners before
Beckford was put through and lobbed the ball over the keeper, everyone on the
side celebrated only to see the ball bounce just wide. Westlake soon came on to
replace a rather anonymous Carole and we continued to dominate. Kandol headed
one straight at the keeper and then we finally did score, Douglas blasted a
low free-kick through the wall, the keeper parried and Beckford headed in the
rebound. Except it wasnt a goal, the linesman flagged for offside looked
marginal from almost directly in line.
Wise then went for broke again. Prutton and Parker off and Flo and
De Vries on. A few were surprised, especially at Prutton going off but then
its worked before and aside from one shot over after Carole and Parker had got
muddled up at the start of the half, Cheltenham had still barely attacked. The
subs didnt really work this time though, with no-one to cross the ball in and
Beckford largely marooned out-wide we actually ended up with less pressure.
Still made another good chance but Beckford couldnt get over it and blazed
high and wide.
Cheltenham then realised that a miracle could happen and pumped a
couple of balls forward, first one the centre-forward clattered Lucas, who was
down for a couple of minutes, second one Lucas came out of his area to head
clear, it went straight to a Cheltenham midfielder who lobbed it back into the
empty net.
Despite 4 minutes of stoppage time and a bit more of the ball
bobbing around their box, we knew our luck had run out by this point and that
was it.
Scores
Lucas 6 Nothing to do but head the ball clear and then turn round and
pick it out of the net.
Richardson 8 Actually had a really solid game at the back, took
players on and was least at fault for our dreadful crossing.
Parker 7 Looked good worth an extended run.
Marques 8 Total control, back on form.
Heath 6 Did what he does.
Prutton 7 Not really at the races, but still surprised to see him
subbed, he is the class of our midfield
Hughes 6 Not his sort of game, we had the ball all the time as they
didnt really want it, but he didnt make much use of it.
Douglas 6 Not enough creative stuff given time and space.
Carole 6 Anonymous
Kandol 7 Improving, won a lot in the air. Used it sensibly, ball never
really ran for him.
Beckford 7 Had most of the chances, missed the easy ones, was unlucky
with the harder ones.
Wise 6 For once his subs did us no good cant complain about the
positive intent though.
Still good pub before the game Landlord on draught very nice and
well win more games than we lose playing like this.
