The reason Blair succeeded was a combination of huge ego, quick-wittedness at the ballot box, and not being afraid to throw back as much dirt as was thrown at him. Oh yeah, and also having one of the finest spin machines ever known. Brown (IMO) seems to be trying to go back to a time before rampant egos and huge spin, and it's just not working.
