No argument with that Tim (other than the first sentence)

He would indeed have to call an election if he lost a vote of no
confidence, but, he is not going to lose a vote of no confidence
because:

1) His own party would not cause such a debate and vote as that would be
disastrous to their future - no one would ever put them back in office
if they have no confidence in themselves

2) If the opposition caused such a debate, he would not lose due to his
majority in parliament - no matter how pissed off his backbenchers may
be, they know that they themselves would lose their seats if an election
were to be called now and so would vote for the government.

As you said though, it's all about themselves - you could change the
parties around in the above scenario and the result would be exactly the
same.

I hate the party system - my local MP ought to be in parliament to
represent me (and 60,000 others in my constituency) and reflect our
views in parliament, thereby the view of the whole country is taken on
whatever issue, however outrageous. The party system kills this stone
dead.

Steve G (still grumpy)

Yes but he has no option if he gets a vote of no confidence, does he?
But exactly my point Steve, the whole thing these days is not the
politics
of the people but the politics of ego .... theirs. The country comes
second to their ambition and yet they are SUPPOSED to be there to serve
the people!
