Hi Bill,

Working on the underside of the machine would drive me crazy. Opening the
sides would be better so larger work can be worked in flat mode as well as a
rotary table operation. If there is deflection in the rail then increase the
size of the rail to handle the load.

Curt, I agree that the router should be able to tilt into a position to work
the endgrain of a box or a bowl when mounted on the spindle on a chuck or face
plate. I also agree that bringing back a finer pitch to enable a lathe copying
feature would be highly desirable. A motor driven option is a must. The
earliest of machines had this feature. Why did we lose it?

I would increase the turning diameter to 11" minimum. I would make sure a
temporary milling table could be installed to pass larger items through the
machine. It should be adjustable for tilt. I don't think being able to work a
6" to 8" flat post is asking too much for a next generation machine.

-Tim

curt for horizontal work it would be easy enough to make a angle bracket to
bolt where the router clamp is then bolt the router clamp to the angle bracket
and the router would be horizontal for bowls and such possibly no need for a
rotary table then
and I'm sure you could mount a template under the cross slide some were to do
bowl profiles
vertical template following is a must this template turning from the side we
have to do sucks.
perhaps spread the inner rails apart and lengthen the z axis too so the
router can fit between
and you could do larger rotary table stuff under the mill as well

dont worry too much curt what ever it wont do we will make it do like we
did with the old machines :)

Hello again. (3x the charm.) ;-)
        Ok here is my input.
make this unit have a carriage that can tilt 90 deg. so you can cut
bowls end grain. (turning bowls are a big market for most turners.)
give it a motor drive.and make a gear for finer movement.

Make the Z axis so that it can free float on a template. or better yet
Give it two templates followers, one for the Y&X axis movements and one for the
Z axis.(rise and plunge movements.) this might help with the pen turners market.
That's all that I can think of at this moment. But If something comes
up, then I will let my know.
        Have a good night.

        C.A.G.
