Hello All, When Legacy came up with the idea of labeling the drive gears A-G and used a decal on the headstock to match the gears, they really made selecting spiral pitches easy. Before that point in time, the instructions included with the machines referred to the gears by the number of teeth. Counting teeth is not easy but it leads to some more interesting facts about your machine.
Did you know that you can quickly calculate the spiral pitch that a legacy drive gear will make if you know the number of teeth? This simple formula works on all of the models using the Standard Duplex Gear. Spiral Pitch = 180 / Number Of Teeth Is this helpful? Not really but what if you know the pitch you need and want a custom gear made? That's easy too. Number Of Teeth = 180 / Spiral Pitch You will find some gear combinations don't physically work on our machines. I have found that gears between 20-120 teeth work pretty well with a few small exceptions. Larger and finer pitches benefit greatly with reduction and multiplication gear sets. Experience has taught me there are many different combinations that achieve the same results. I need to toss in a sales pitch here, if you need a custom gear built for your Legacy, please contact me off list. I'll send you a custom gear chart that shows the tooth count and the resulting pitches on the legacy so you don't need to use any math at all! -Tim -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Legacy Ornamental Mills" group.
