Subject: Re: "Z" axis template follower

and the lord said, "let there be updates!"...the ups guy should have a white
beard and wear a red suit because it is like christmas around here when he
shows up...LOL...got some parts from mcmaster today to get this mod
rolling...first up, is setting up the '''Z" axis lead screw to support the
router platform at the top cross bar bracket...some thrust bearings above and
below the upper cross bar was in order...since i was doing this, i figured a
ball bearing would replace the bronze bushing (that legacy originally used)
very well and provide lateral support and alignment...this is a bit of overkill
as there is very little lateral support needed, but i figured what the heck,
it's just a few more parts...this bearing has a 5/8" bore with a flange...it is
held in place by a split collar with a 2 3/8" bore to match the outside
diameter of the bearing...one half of the split collar is welded to the cross
bar bracket...there is a split collar below the bottom thrust bearing...the
action of the lead screw is very smooth...big improvement as to what it was
before and probably would be a nice mod for anyone to do, even if not doing
this template follower...the whole purpose of setting these parts up is to be
able to disengage the router platform from the lead screw in a quick and easy
manner...it is now possible to remove the middle bracket permanently from the
router platform...the bracket is shown in the first photo...this bracket sits
behind the router, just above the black nylon block with the acme thread and
access to it was very difficult...if left in place, it would be a lot of work
to disassemble all that was necessary just to disconnect the router platform
from the lead screw...removing it was a must...now you can just remove the hand
wheel, loosen the cross bar screws, loosen the shaft collar screw and remove
the two screws that hold the bottom bracket in place, which are easily
accessible...all this should not take more than a minute or two...next up is
swapping out the vertical rails of the "Z" carriage with some left over leg
support railing i have...the original pieces are 15", the new pieces will be
20"...this will help compensate for the additional space needed for the counter
balance...and hopefully the bearings will get here early next week so i can set
those in place...as always, all comments welcome...thanks...joe
