That (filtering messages into a Legacy email folder and sorting/grouping by
subject) is actully a much better solution than digests in that while
digests generate fewer emails, the content is not sorted/grouped by subject
but rather by date.

I also regret there is no Digest. To get around it I filter Legacy into its
own folder and then sort mail by subject. I can then more easily
batch-delete emails by subject and individual that I do not want to read.
