I am also unclear on the proper location for nicknames. For example, my
Dad's nickname, only when he was younger, was "Red." It's not actually a
quoted name. Right now I have it, in quotes (is that necessary?), in the AKA
field (in Given Name field) as well as in the Nickname field in the Event
List. Do I need it both places? And lastly, when I view Master Lists,
Surnames, why is "Red" showing up in that list (as far as I KNOW, at no
place have I put "Red" in a surname field)?

What a very helpful tip!  So basically I need to remove the nicknames out of
the AKA field and only leave name variations found in the records, right?
