Sorry, one other question (well, at least for this minute). In this instance, should it be recorded as a Nickname, a Went By, or a quoted name? (none of them make exact sense as a good answer): I have several of these cases, but I'll use a specific example. My brother's name is Robert Keith Wilson. He went by Keith. He was never called Robert. I would want any narrative reports to say Keith, not Robert and not Robert Keith. And yet, I wouldn't think I should put Robert Keith "Keith" Wilson in the individual name field. I was wondering, if I put "Keith" (in quotes" in the Went By field, would that be picked up in the narrative reports if I specify to use the quoted name? Sorry so many questions--I'm trying to get a good cleaned-up file and have a solid understanding of my formatting procedures before I add any new information to my file (still working with what I brought in from Family Tree Maker). Thanks, Barbara

If you wish you can put a nickname in AKAs without quotes (quotes in AKAs do nothing as far as I know). There is no need to put it in quotes in the name field and also add it as a nickname to the AKAs, as you can show the quoted name in reports should you so wish. 2) In reports, you can choose to have the name in quotes used in the narrative but not displayed in the name field. 3) Whichever way you choose to do it depends on your personal choice. I can only suggest that you try making some reports with just 2 or 3 people in and see how they look before choosing - that's the way I work. 4) I cannot think how "Red" got into the Surname Field unless it was put there at some stage. Is it possible it was inadvertently put in the surname field and then deleted? If so it would remain in the Master List. Have you checked the Surname Master List (View>Master Lists>Surname) and checked to see if anyone is currently using it? If not you can delete it.
