Just a guess. Since I have been aware for many years,
that occasionally someone who leaves Legacy running
for about 'all day' has similar problems, I never
leave my computer running 'unattended'. I am on about
my fifth or sixth computer, some because of failure,
some to get larger size, some to give the older one to
relatives; so I am not concerned with the 'number of
on-off' that a computer may have built into it (real
or imagined). This 'urban legend' has no basis in
reality IMHO. My old computer, when turned on, zapped
enough energy to obviously speed up the electric
meter. I have not bothered to check the meter speed
for my current laptop, It is just easier to unplug and
store when not in use. This may be transforming into
off topic, but I suspect some users are leaving the
system on for the above reasons.
A friend of mine uses at his company an IBM PC (the
style before Windows 3.0), which is turned on and off
daily. It was bought in the mid '80s. This computer is
still working?
Most of us will want to replace our old computer with
a bigger, faster computer but may wait until it dies
to buy it, but with backups in place we should not be
panicked that it will die some day.
