Michael, I believe Evidence Explained sets out some simple guidelines for naming sources, and that she recommends using the country, state, etc when possible.
Because my research is almost entirely in this country (to this point), I do not use USA in my source names. Example from my source list: Illinois, White census 1850 (Ancestry) Illinois, White census 1860 (Ancestry) Illinois, White History of White County (book, 1883) Illinois, White Index to Probate, 1822-1844 (book) Illinois, White Marriages (book, Vaught) Illinois, White Sinking of Genl Lyon (NY Times, 1865) Some sources do not lend themselves to a geographic sorting. These, if possible, I put under the individuals name: Walker, Helton R homestead proof (1881) Walker, Helton R comp. mil. service record (CSA) Walker, Helton R obituary (MV Standard, 1901) Others, particularly very broad sources, used for a wide number of people, regardless of state of residence, are topical: Military Civil War Soldiers (Ancestry) Military Civil War, Edward D. Gerdes Civil War web page Military - Civil War, Soldiers and Sailors System (database) Military Civil War, pension index (Ancestry) Military Militia in the frontier wars, 1790-1796 (book, Clark) Military WWI Draft registration (Ancestry) etc. For census, I find it is helpful to add Ancestry or Heritage Quest in parenthesis at the end of the source name, now that the images are available in several places. At the moment, I am using Ancestry the most. There was a period when I used HeritageQuest a lot. Others do quite different things, I image. This has worked for me. I dont fumble about looking for a source very often. (Although that still happens sometimes!) The training video suggests: Country, State, County, City - date - Census - Name for a census, but of course there are any number of sources out there. I don't want to make up my own system which may change from entry to entry. This would of course result in the same type of source being listed in two or more different ways. Is there a guide or list? Is "Evidence Explained" the book to get?
