Not true. Windows is perfectly happy to use filenames that contain spaces. Most of the pictures that I have attached to people, events, sources, etc. in Legacy contain spaces. For example, I routinely use file names of the type "Bob Janice - Birth Certificate.jpg". Windows and Legacy have absolutely no problems with this construct.

As far as using these file names when creating web pages from Legacy - all you have to do is check off the box "Convert to lowercase letters" on the "Formatting" tab when you choose the "Web Page Creation" option from Legacy. Legacy will then automatically convert the file names to the form "bob_janice_-_birth_certificate.jpg" when generating your web pages. I've been doing this for several years now with no problems when creating Descendant web pages.

Both Ron and Dave are correct in their comments about the possibility of confusion when images with spaces are included in web pages. Since most web servers use some form of Apache as the underlying control program for the web it may cause some problems since Apache (and Linux or Unix) are case and character sensitive. Getting rid of the spaces and uppercase letters is probably the safest route - luckily, Legacy can do this for you.

Windows won't look at a filename with spaces - therefore the underscore. Whether you load in on the 'Net is not the issue - its how a particular program will treat it. So underscore works all the time - spaces very rarely, if ever.

Someone recently said to create file names with _ instead of

What happens when a file name with spaces is uploaded to the Internet?

Is there any other application that requires _ instead of spaces?

    Thanks.
