for residence I've been attaching a copy of the city directories - I also
do this for employment, some marriages and deaths.

Just  curious. Do you enter the source first and copy it to each event or

I  add several events for census sources. I enter residence,
occupation,  marital status (if the person is older and still single or
divorced),  education ("could read, write and speak English"),
immigration, real  estate, value of property, military service, etc.
One event for each of  the items on the census. Just my way of doing
it. That way I can see at  a glance what I have for each person.
