The census event allows me to see in family reports exactly where people
were at a given time. It's kind of a "location at a glance by year" deal
that is very useful to me. I copy the census event for each family member
and add their personal enumeration details. The entire family is shown in
the source detail Text Comments. The heading on reports follows this
pattern: Census - 1850 - Ulysses, Tompkins County, New York .

Bill,
I agree. I did the same thing you did. Before I quit using a census as an
event, I argued the point with my genealogy instructor at the local
community college. He uses it as an event but could not come up with a
reason to do so. If you are recording the residence event at the time of
the census and use the census as a source, what does a census event add?

Again, as many have said, "Whatever works for you is the correct way to go".

I used to use obituaries and census as events, but realized what a waste it
was since they are used as sources anyway. I guess it's up to each person
so I am not dictating whether to use it or not. To me it's just more work
especially after linking that source with all the people it belongs with.
That's pretty much why I stopped doing it. I also had obituary events
listed by the newspaper name and the census was just listed as census for an
event. After seeing it so many times I thought it looked odd so I stopped
doing it.
