I agree.  I did the same thing you did.  Before I quit using a census as an 
event, I argued the point with my genealogy instructor at the local community 
college.  He uses it as an event but could not come up with a reason to do so.  
If you are recording the residence event at the time of the census and use the 
census as a source, what does a census event add?

Again, as many have said, "Whatever works for you is the correct way to go".

I used to use obituaries and census as events, but realized what a waste it was 
since they are used as sources anyway.  I guess it's up to each person so I am 
not dictating whether to use it or not.  To me it's just more work especially 
after linking that source with all the people it belongs with.  That's pretty 
much why I stopped doing it.  I also had obituary events listed by the 
newspaper name and the census was just listed as census for an event.  After 
seeing it so many times I thought it looked odd so I stopped doing it.
