I should mention as a retired call center collector that outbound calls
would be made from different numbers than inbound calls would be
directed. So you could think it was a spoof number when it wasn't. I
would image that most centers that do outbound calling have that type
of a phone system. Also I have not received any calls from
GenealogyBank.com. I get a lot of E-Mails from World Vital Records
because I bit on their free days during some holiday or special about a
year ago. I just couldn't figure out how to do an effective search.
Ancestry may not bring up what I want immediately; but I can usually
find some way to get the info.

What is displayed on Caller ID does not have to be the number from
which the
call is made.

"Caller ID spoofing is the practice of causing the telephone network to
display
a number on the recipient's Caller ID display which is not that of the
actual
originating station."

Programs that do this are for sale everywhere. A solicitor was once
dumb enough
to spoof MY phone number when calling me!

I was told by the guy from GenealogyBank.com that he was calling from
Utah. I
figure somewhere near Salt Lake City where most of these companies are
from.

The number on my cell phone is: 1-866-641-3297. Since it's a toll
free number,
it could be from anywhere or a bogus number that can't be called back.
I've
found this to be true for a lot of other calls I've gotten where the
number on
the caller idea is not a real number for the company.

Anybody got the phone number or city they are calling from? We have
caller id and we religiously let calls go to the answering machine if we
do not recognize the caller. Sometimes we let it go to the answering
machine WHEN WE DO KNOW THE CALLER. ;-) But I am now wondering if some
of the persistent calls are from these companies.
