Yes, Margaret, no genealogy program required - only the Adobe Acrobat Reader which comes with most newer computers or may be downloaded free from Adobe. These files are also quite small in size which facilitates emailing. Now, if you have a family member who is involved in family research they may wish to have a GEDCOM file, and this is easy to do. I'm sure someone has already answered your question about reviewing GEDCOM results. I create a new family file and then import the GEDCOM file into it.

If I understand you correctly, you are creating reports as PDF files that you send via email. The recipients do not need to have a genealogy program of any kind. Is that correct? Mailing hard copies is out of the question. I have only one without email; however, her daughter shares with her. I generate various Legacy reports in PDF format and distribute them electronically. I always include a pedigree chart so they can see how the generations fit into the picture. And, of course, the trees are split into maternal and paternal ancestors. If something materializes of interest on one individual or family, I distribute a report on him/her/them. Of course, pictures of people and various documents are of interest. This has worked well for us. Hope this helps somewhat. But that would not be my way to go. What goes privately to family is one thing, what appears on a public tree is another. May I ask how you sent your tree to family? I've been collecting a good deal of information on different branches of the family and have no clue about how I'll distribute any of it. When I first distributed my tree I set all living people to private and got a howl of protest from them. They wanted to see themselves listed along with everyone else. Now, when I add new living people I also ask about their preference. Haven't had one yet that wants to be shown as "living so and so." At the time the government picked 72 years for privacy concerns, they never expected people to live as long as they do now! I would never publish anything on a living person, no matter how old they are, without their permission, even though all that information is a matter of public record! I believe Ancestry will suppress details of anyone still living.
