Bernard, I'm sorry to say this, but when it comes to British locations you are quite wrong. There is *no* layer between county and Country - and I absolutely refuse to invent one to fit an artificial convention. We do not have only ecclesiastical parishes, but also civil parishes, which are not necessarily co-terminus with the church parish with the same or similar name, and it was to this type of parish to which I referred.
Many of us include the house and street in the location because in our view it is the most appropriate place to include it. Largely because if the address function is used there are restriction as to how and where it appears on websites/reports which are unacceptable to us. I am not being dogmatic about this, and am stopping nobody from doing their own thing, just as we will continue to do ours. I am aware that our way leads to a very large Location file, but so what? There is plenty of room for it, and if one includes every house and street somewhere else then the memory usage will be just as big - if not more so because some of it will be included twice. Sorry, Bernard, I cannot agree. I don't think the location was ever supposed to include the complete postal address as we would say today but only the place of interest. Using the example sent Ron sent: house name/number, Street, local district/town, (parish), (city), County, Country this would be: town/village, County, XXX, Country and this fits in the 4 values. The XXX is only an example for what part of Greatbitian someone comes from and the data (parish) is church data and should be included in the religious data. For the data about street names, house nr. etc we have the posibilties to "Add or edit Addreess information" and the EVENT "residence" where geo-data can be added. If I'd used a new location for every place I lived in the last four years I'd have three locations. Using the above I have one Location, one Address information and two Events: Residence. With all the places I've been we could get upto over 25 locations. Only for me. In my datbase I have about 26 000 individuals. Using a seperate location for each one with an average of two locations for each one we would have about 100 000 locations ;-). BTW. Hundreds of them live in the same villages. I hope you understand what I want to say. Bernhard P.S. It was great to see the word village again ________________________________ From: Ron Ferguson [mailto:ronfergy....@tiscali.co.uk] Sent: Saturday, October 22, 2011 3:07 AM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Showing Short Location Names on Screens From: M. The only difference for Short Locations is that I drop the country. However when I eventually get round to it I intend to change the counties from their full name to the abbreviated Chapman Codes (just the name for our system) eg. Lancashire will become LAN. Ron Ferguson http://www.fergys.co.uk/ Ron, Yes, that's how I have started to change them. I wanted to experiment first so I updated only a handful of my locations. Looking back in the Archives, I see a message from Jenny about this earlier today. That's what she said she is doing. Can you provide an example of what you have for long and short names? Thanks! I only ask because it is not the way I do it, not because there is anything particularly wrong with it - just looks a bit strange to me! The Help Files are clear that the long name will always be used on the Information Screens - when you think about it, it has to be so, because that is where the long name is entered. Brenzel Sent: Friday, October 21, 2011 9:23 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Showing Short Location Names on Screens I think that I have found a bug. Either that or my interpretation of the effect is incorrect. Has anyone else set the option for "Short Location Names on Screens" on the Customize View tab? It isn't working the way that I thought it would. As others do, I do not use the "4 field" format for locations. My locations contain the full address including names of churches, cemeteries, etc. Some users have suggested separating the number portion of a street address from the street name itself in order to improve sorting by keeping streets together. I sort my location list right to left. For example, I have the following set for 123 Main Street, City, County, State, Country: Long name = 123, Main Street, City, County, State, Country Short name = 123 Main Street, City, County, State, Country I have done that but I don't like the way that it looks on the Legacy screens. Family and Chronology views are good. The short location name is displayed. Individual's Information and Marriage Information screens show the long name in the vital info and events/facts sections. I suspect that I still see the location long names because those screens allow for the selection of the location so it displays the long names, whereas the other screens are display only.
