NARA published one way back in 1990 called "Using Records in the National Archives for Genealogical Research" GIL #5. This was replace by a GIL #110. But when NARA replaced it they did not include the source citation templates which were all geared to genealogists. The source templates in GIL #110 are more generic for any researcher not the specific ones for a compiled military service record, a pension application, a bounty land application file or a census.
