I count 23 messages in less than 3 days personally - but that's not the
point really.
I do agree, it's not exactly countless, but when (like me) one has business
emails, and personal emails, and mailing list emails, as well as spam all
coming to the same inbox (even if via importing from other accounts),
wading through what is and isn't "required viewing now" can get
problematical.
Using filters, labels, and automatic archiving of messages is the way I get
around this to enable me to quickly see what needs to be viewed now, and
what can wait for later.

Digest not possible, no problems here - would be nice, but not having it
isn't going to change the way I view messages.
