Ian,
There are very few reports that don't have Privacy Options or, in the
case of the Calendar Creator and List, a way to choose just the dead.
The ones without Privacy Options are mostly ones that you'd use for your
own analysis and not for sharing.
All the family, descendant and ancestor reports have Privacy Options.

Brian, yes - you have properly considered what I wrote and in essence
what you have said is true, providing that all "reports" have that
facility (wherever they appear on the numerous menus). Indeed, I am
referring predominantly to living individuals (usually, my concern
results from where I have forgotten to make them private on adding the
individual).
Living individuals within my data collection are essential to my
understanding and to linkages. But I don't want them always reported.
But, to date, I don't export subsets of my data (as GEDCOM, etc) to
send to others. I restrict my interchange to PDF files.

Ian,
It seems to me that you are wanting to apply Private to all those who
are living but the best way is to apply privacy settings to the
reports which might include living people. Those options are available
from the various reports and do not require the person to be private.
Start any report
Click the Privacy Options button on the right of the report screen
Make your selections on what you want for living people a. Exclude
totally b. Suppress details (birth, death and any events, notes etc.)
so only their name is included. There is a sub option here to change
the name to living so even the name is suppressed.
c. There are other options for deceased spouses and children of living
people as well.

Is there a workflow that can use(Legacy v9) tools to search for those
individuals whose birth date is such that they should be 'Private',
and then set them as such? I could wade through the data files and
work out how to do it in Access, but I'm wondering if this can be done
with minimal effort just within the Legacy FT interface.
I don't see this in the Help information (PDF, CHM).
