You are right about Virginia. We have a Richmond city and a Richmond County which are not located anywhere near each other. There is a Fairfax City and a Fairfax County which are located next to each other, and many others. So check your location carefully!

The city has the status level of a county. Also in Virginia cities are independent of the counties to which they geographically belong. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
