Strong feelings about "addons" or "downloads" required for any genealogy
program. I want to concentrate on family projects with pictures rather than
program file management. PAF-DOS used to have about two dozen utilities that
were obsolete when PAF 4-Windows was released. PAF 5 users recommend over
$100 in addons now and do not agree on the best one to buy.

Text-only detail collectors may be newer researchers who find out the
limitations of Legacy's supplied charts and reports when it is too late. As
a family historian since 1967, I've always planned data to share with
relatives rather than a source for every variation of every event.
Non-researchers NEED to see charts and researchers with large files NEED to
see the most important individuals during data entry without paying a
printing service for a long banner with boxes for all descendants.

Legacy TreeDraw "addon" is download-only. Costs about $9 more than a whole
new FTM 2006 program with Charting Companion included on the program CD due
to ship by the end of August. Legacy Companion costs an additional $20 and
must also be downloaded. Someone told me that Legacy Companion showed place
holder commas in charts but haven't tried any version of Companion yet
myself.

Data should be entered directly in the SAME genealogy program used to print
family books and wall charts with pictures. Using two desktop genealogy
programs for the same file means limiting data entry to fields that transfer
accurately. I'm hoping that Legacy will fix the Relationship Chart before
version 5 is replaced but found a workaround way to print an accurate
relationship chart using FTM 2005.

Place holder commas from incomplete master locations in Legacy show up in
FTM if a GEDCOM is imported. Different fields are used in Legacy for
occupations and details for events. Pictures do not transfer between Legacy
and FTM.

FTM charts are easier for home printing because boxes overlap page breaks
and three pictures can be included in each box. Charts are also "clickable"
to navigate the FTM database for editing. FTM charts allow multiples of up
to 50 items in a single box. They can be used as clickable custom reports
for the most important individuals in a direct line box chart.

Haven't been able to use Legacy 5 Narrative saved as PDF for a planned 2000
family project due to unsuitable wording, spacing and picture
limitations. -- Elizabeth
