Hi Cathy,
Seeing from wife comes from the South West of WA, that to me means Western
Australia.
See your point about abbreviations being ambiguous. However, I was taught in
the early stages of learning aspects of genealogy, that the Chapman Code was
the 'bible' for place names, such as provinces, counties etc.

Hi Noel,
That's assuming that the person using the abbreviations has used the
Chapman Codes or postal abbreviations and not their own.
However, even official abbreviations are ambiguous.
eg: What does WA mean?
If your genealogy is intended for or available to a world audience then
abbreviations should be kept to a minimum.

Ros,
Understand your problem with the abbreviation "SA".
Can I suggest in future if you have a query on an abbreviated location,
select
"Help>Type in 'Abbreviations'>then select "Common Abbreviations'"
then look for the abbreviation you require.
The abbreviations adhere to a world standard which is known as the Chapman
Code and is used in genealogy research. Apart from that, each country
falls into line with a standard for postal reasons. For example in
Australia - QLD represents Queensland, in U.S.A. - KS is Kansas, in
England SSX is Sussex.
Hope this helps
