Hi Noel,
That's assuming that the person using the abbreviations has used the
Chapman Codes or postal abbreviations and not their own.
However, even official abbreviations are ambiguous.
eg: What does WA mean?
If your genealogy is intended for or available to a world audience
then abbreviations should be kept to a minimum.

Ros,
Understand your problem with the abbreviation "SA".
Can I suggest in future if you have a query on an abbreviated location, select
"Help>Type in 'Abbreviations'>then select "Common Abbreviations'"
then look for the abbreviation you require.
The abbreviations adhere to a world standard which is known as the
Chapman Code and is used in genealogy research. Apart from that,
each country falls into line with a standard for postal reasons. For
example in Australia - QLD represents Queensland, in U.S.A. - KS is
Kansas, in England SSX is Sussex.
Hope this helps
