Regarding abbreviations; I recently purchased "Getting It Right, the definitive guide to recording family history accurately" by Mary H. Slawson. In the book, she recommends, "None of the information used to substantiate the identity of your ancestor should be abbreviated".
That might sound harsh, and each person must decide to what degree they will use abbreviations. My current thought is to follow Mary's recommendation for regular location names, and use abbreviations only in the short location name. My two cents worth.
