Ros and others with Leg 3, 4, or 5 vs 6 issues.

That is good advice until the Leg 6 issues are resolved for Windows 98SE
users.
I just did another short comparison of ver. 5 and ver. 6 on my 98SE
computer. The results and differences are HUGE!!!
All tests were made from a clean cold boot.
Windows 98SE:
Starting point with 98SE desktop open, there were 89% GDI resources
available.
Started Leg 5, 5.0.0.173 26 Oct. 2004 and had 61% GDI's with the Family
View. That required 28% GDI's, down to 61%.
Started a Descendent Narrative Book Report. To "preview" of the first
page required just 6% GDI's, now down to 55%.
No matter what windows I opened after this point could I get resources
even remotely close to 20%, a very critical point.
Now compare this to Leg 6.
Windows 98SE:
Starting point with 98SE desktop open, there were 89% GDI resources
available.
Started Leg 6, 0.0.64 16 Sep. 2005 and had 43% GDI's with the Family
View. That required 46% GDI's, down to 43%.
Started a Descendent Narrative Book Report. To "preview" of the first
page requiring 7% GDI's, down to 36%.
Opening more windows will decrease the GDI resources very quickly. Once
they are below 20% the computer may crash at any time with additional
activity. Closing some open windows doesn't always give back all
resources used, so it's an additive condition.
I surely hope the programmers are reading this. These a factual numbers
I can and have repeatedly generated. What has bothered me for many
builds and at least the last two major upgrades is repeatedly redrawing
the screen when Legacy first loads. I consider that a sign of code
over-written by newer/better code. A major code clean up, i.e. a clean
program write, would probably go a l-o-n-g way toward a smoother and
leaner Legacy making optimum use of resources on ANY system!!! Rather
than putting all your efforts into new bells and whistles, do something
for the users that have supported the program over the years and are
very happy with the way it used to work. My first version of Legacy
came on two 1.44meg diskettes.
Perhaps the final builds of older versions such as 3 & 4 could make
available for free download again.
I have several older versions of Legacy on my archive CD's if anybody is
interested. You may contact me off this list.
