The following is posted to the List for ER. It's in response to many of ER's

flame, but rather a few honest questions for ER and very few comments... No
offense to anyone is intended, please don't take it that way...

ER,
If you have been so unhappy with Legacy since the year 2000 (five years
now?), can you not find something better? - rather than continue negativity
here? Or perhaps offer something constructive? Repeating the same litany of
claimed problems for years, you do seem to be so focused, repeating a now
predictable litany, it comes across as just complaining while unable to
offer a solution. Generally, I believe, others seem to be able to get things
done with this same software, and do so quite happily.
It seems to me, in my opinion, that most here are quite happy with Legacy
(even with minor glitches at times) because it is the best.
I believe you will not find the perfect software program - of any kind on
any platform - that will always work perfectly in all situations and do
exactly and precisely and only what you want it do, every time.
If I had projects on hold for years, I would not lay blame on the tool I
thought was inadequate, or even on the tool maker for not making the perfect
tool for my particular project: I would however either find a different
tool, or admit the project that could wait that long was never important to
me in the first place.
I'm curious about one thing, if you're still with me: If Legacy is so
inadequate for you, what have you found that works better? Please share.
As for the occasional minor glitch, I believe, the Legacy programmers are
doing a wonderful job fixing those as they find them. They do this even
while offering a highly useful, inexpensive, yet up-to-date product that
meets the needs of many family historians and genealogists. And happily, I
would guess for many, they've even added features that are useful to a very
wide range of people. This includes those that speak a language other than
English, those that would like some guidance in their research, or might
even want something with more bells than a plain typewriter for typing up a
quick gedcom. They've even worked to make Legacy compatible with other
programs that their users might like to work with (such as even more charts,
research suggestions, or manipulation of data). In my opinion, they offer
the best product for genealogy research, bar none.
In short, can you offer actual solutions? Perhaps constructive comments are
useful. -- If not, can you find something better? Maybe even just less
negativity. -- And, why five years of putting off a project, really?
Believe it or not, I do wish you luck and progress in your delayed projects.
Dan

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Time for Legacy Lite?
Are Legacy staff planning a full-featured program on CD or a free version
to replace 10 mb PAF 5 last updated 3.5 years ago? $40 for Legacy TreeDraw
and $20 for Legacy Companion is a lot to spend for charts compared to
build-in wall charts in $30 to $60 genealogy programs.
Transer of data to or from Legacy 6 needs to be carefully checked because
Legacy 6 does not automatically recognize the note spacing of other recent
programs. Custom data entry in Legacy 6 is lost in GEDCOM imports by other
programs.
When WinME and WinXP were pre-loaded on retail computers, Legacy staff
were working with Win98 and Win2000 computeres. They didn't see variations
reported by paying customers of Legacy 3 and 4 for up to 18 months.
I didn't buy 16 bit Legacy 2 because pictures had long file names from
March 1996 but have downloaded 127 public builds of Legacy 3-4-5-6 since
Feb 2000. Early Legacy 3 customers were charged a second time after Dec
2000 for Deluxe Legacy 3. Most of the time, the intended project was on
hold hoping for different options in the Legacy Narrative report. Now the
delay is with Legacy 6 book options that do not work as expected.
Geo Database added in Legacy 5, Research Guidance in Legacy 6 and multiple
languages are not useful to me. Improvements in reports and built-in
charts were discussed on the list when Legacy 3 was released about the end
of Feb 2000. Extra cost addons were a big surprise in December 2000.
