Thanks for the suggestions to all who help.

I do have ms access but have never used it and it does not seem
intuitive, so I went to plan B.  I created a GEDCOM from the problem
family file and then looked at the GEDCOM with OpenOffice word
processor.  The notes are there, but when I load the GEDCOM in and
convert it to a family file, still no notes.

I also used; file, file management, check-repair, as suggested and no success.
