You can download the free standard version of Legacy and give it a test
drive.

To answer your specific question, you can search a specific field for
text or a date, but you cannot search all fields at once. So you can ask
Legacy to give you a list of individuals whose birthplace contains
"Elmira". But you cannot ask Legacy the find "Elmira" anywhere in the
database. I suppose this is because Legacy uses MS Access as its
underlying database. An SQL query to locate "Elmira" in all columns of
all tables would be a monstrosity.

One workaround would be to export your Legacy data to a GEDCOM, then use
a text editor to search the GEDCOM for "Elmira".

P.S. Because MS Access is the underlying database, you can always
purchase a copy of Access and "roll your own" queries.
