awhile ago when I had dial up, I had a similar problem and used to use a software program that would free me up from the inactivity disconnect blues. A search on google, brought up this gem that would seem to fit the bill:

I have the same problem, with dial-up connection at 26.1k top speed. I would think that an upgrade over the web would only download the changed components, and should be quite quick. 4 hours or more is just not doable from here. (Evidently most people have fast connections, because no one else has responded to this problem.)
