Hi Alice,
The options in Legacy can give you what you want - or almost.
If you ever want surnames with only initial (or appropriate
capitalisation eg DeSimone rather than DeSIMONE) I don't think you
can get that currently except with Mc.
However, if that isn't an issue for you.
1) Make sure that in Options > Customise - the Data Format tab
You check:
<Don't change what I enter> under Letter case for Surnames
and Uncheck
<Show SURNAMES in uppercase letters> under Displaying Surnames
Also make sure, when doing reports that on the Report Options Format
Tab you DON'T check Uppercase Surnames.
2) If the Surname is already entered in Legacy, you need to now
correct it to the format you want. You do this in the Master Surname
List. You can get there EITHER by clicking the down arrow at the end
of the Surname box OR View > Master Lists > Surname
Note 1 - if you want other surnames like SMITH to appear in All
Capitals, then you will need to edit them so they show in All
Capitals in the Master Surname List.
Note 2 - if you want two or more formatted versions of the same
spelling of the surname, then you need to add them to the Master
Surname list. One way, as Graham suggested, is to enter someone with
a surname AAAA and then edit it.
I'm not sure that a computer program would be able to handle DeSIMONE
in any other way.
You wouldn't want it automatically doing this to every surname
starting with DE as you'd end up with DeNNISON etc.

Hello Graham,
Thank you for taking the time to write and post such detailed
instructions for solving this problem only Peter Holmes and I seem
to be struggling with.
I may not understand your directions, but I have failed in my attempts
to make the Italian surname DESIMONE appear as DeSIMONE on the
Family View. What you have suggested may very well work for Peter
and his Dutch ancestors, but I am simply too dense to get it to work with
my Italian family. Perhaps if I put a space between the De and the Simone
it would work, but it's not my place to change the spelling or appearance of
a surname in order to satisfy my sense of appearances or the deficiency of
a computerized genealogy program. I hope the DeSimone's will forgive me.
