Thanks Cathy,

I tried this but ended up missing the cousin that I wanted to give the gedcom to. He's something like a 5th cousin. I could have missed one of the "distant" ancestors, that's probably why there are people missing. Problem with this way is that you can never be sure if you've missed someone or even who you've missed.

I may try Dennis' method and create a temp database and unlink my wife's and mother's family.

Hi David,
Have you looked at:

This may work for you.
It doesn't for me because of marriages between distant cousins from maternal and paternal branches so everything is dragged in.

I use Tagging to separate a particular line.
1. Clear a tag number
2. Using the Pedigree View, note each of the most distant ancestors of the person whose line you want to separate (in this case your father) 3. Go to each of these most distant ancestor couples in turn and tag their descendants on the tag number you cleared for use (for as many generations as you want to share). DON'T choose Entire Descendant Line. 4. Export your Gedcom or Legacy File using those Tagged with your Tag number along with their spouses, parents, children

That should do it. Omitted will be the odd excursion you've made into the ancestors of those marrying into this line. It only picks up the parents of those marrying in. So if any of these are significant in your research or your distant cousin, then you'll also need to tag these on the same tag number before you export.

You can do this by creating a Focus Group of the descendants of each of these distant ancestors but I don't think it's so easy to then include the parents and other children of those marrying in.

Cheers,
Cathy

I currently have a "master" database with "all" of my family in it, including my wife's family. I am trying to give a distant cousin on my father's side a gedcom containing only my father's family members. In other words I want to exclude my wife's family and my mother's family.

I've tried using the focus group to create a list that I can tag (for export), but I invariably end up with my mother's family included or member's of my father's side missing.

Can anyone offer some advice on how I should separate my father's side from my mother's side (using the focus group or otherwise)?

Thanks,

David
