--- Begin Message --- Having just read your recent article entitled "D.I.Y. Linux" at [http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1854005,00.asp], I see two major problems. One is that in the section "Linux: How It All Began," you write that "Linux joined the GNU Project in 1992." This statement is inaccurate. The Linux kernel is, as you write, distributed under the terms of the GNU GPL. However, that does not mean that it is officially part of the GNU Project. The HURD is the GNU kernel, while Linux's only official association with the Project is by virtue of using a GNU license. A change should be made to the article to correct this inaccuracy.

The second problem can be found on the article's first page, where you write: "A good resource for beginners is www.linuxfromscratch.org, where you can download a free online book with instructions for customizing a Linux machine—regardless of which distro you choose—and participate in newsgroups and other community forums." This statement is not only inaccurate, it is misleading. The LFS Project gives "step-by-step instructions for building [a] customized Linux system entirely from source," NOT for customizing an existing distribution. You clearly have either not read enough about LFS, or what you have read, you've completely misunderstood.

Moreover, the part about LFS being "a good resource for beginners" has most likely been at least one cause of the recent increase in visits by inexperienced users to the LFS IRC support channel. We've had a number of people coming in and asking for help when they quite obviously do not have the requisite Linux knowledge to build an LFS system. Especially considering that to successfully build LFS requires a fair amount of experience with the Linux command line, your article - seemingly geared for "those [venturing] into Linux fresh from the Windows or Macintosh worlds" - has no business even mentioning Linux From Scratch, and certainly not in the way that you do.

If you could notify me as soon as the aforementioned inaccuracies have been rectified, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Erik Glyttov
