Ah, I see it's an opengl thing.

So what makes something "VBO compatible"?  Is it basically a standard
lots-of-stuff-indexed-by-vertex-indices format?

[The descriptions of VBO I found on the net were kind of confusing, as
they all seemed very focused on memory management issues...]
