The argument against CSD always comes back to implementation cost, maintenance burden, and personal preferences about title bars. As valid as they are, there also has to be some recognition that user expectations have changed. Whether we like it or not, integrated title bars and application-controlled window chrome have become the norm across modern desktop platforms. Windows, macOS, GNOME, browsers, Microsoft Office, OnlyOffice, and many other applications have moved in that direction. Users notice when software feels out of step with the rest of their desktop environment. I disagree with the repeated characterization that this is merely cosmetic or has no practical benefit. Perceived modernity affects adoption, and not keeping in line with modern user expectations is, right now, hurting adoption. As a case in point, while LibreOffice is increasingly presenting itself as a key alternative to proprietary office suites and an important part of digital sovereignty efforts, the EU is investing instead in Euro-Office as a fork of OnlyOffice. That should give us pause. A lot of users who want an open-source office suite are choosing OnlyOffice despite its limitations because they perceive it as more modern, user-friendly, and approachable. The number of duplicates on this bug over nearly a decade suggests this isn't a niche request, that there is a persistent user demand that shouldn't simply be dismissed. The long-term risk here isn't that LibreOffice adopts a UI convention that some contributors dislike.
