Subject: Re: FAQ TIME! (was: Re: [LIB] So who makes an 8.4mm drive?)

1. Nobody makes a 8.4mm 2.5" HD. Only Toshiba made 8.45mm 2.5" HDs, but have
discontinued making them. All 2.5" 8.45mm high Libretto compatible hard drives
are listed on my site below if you'd like to hunt ebay.com and yahoo.com down
for an older model.

2. It has been posted several times from various 9.5mm HD users in 8.45mm L50
slots that the extra 1mm difference eventually resulted in RAM chip
delamination from the area of the motherboard directly above the HD bay, thus
killing their Librettos.

3. I'd HIGHLY recommend disassembly of the <L70 models to remove the plastic
spacers around the HD bay under the black plastic sheeting before insertion of
a 9.5mm HD - otherwise, you'll have trouble for sure later on! They simply
were not designed to handle the extra 1mm.

L100-L110 models, thankfully, initially shipped with IBM 9.5mm HDs, so they
were designed for them.

----

Like anything else, the majority of people who have upgraded to 9.5mm HDs in
<L70 models don't see any problems, but a handful have. It's up to you to
determine whether you'd want to disassemble the entire Libretto (SEE parts
diagram on my site; it'll take 30min-1hour to get to the HD bay) or chance it.
