Bingo!  Thanks.  As everyone has advised gazillions of times by now - but I 
didn't listen - copying the .cab files to the HDD is mandatory, even for a 
2-PCMCIA machine.  I had to set up the drivers twice, as Device Manager 
insisted that an updated driver was needed, then simply repeated the whole 
process again, and now she's Cardbussed!
