Here's the pictures as promised on the internals of the HP m820e 4x4x20 SCSI
external portable CD-RW.

As you can see, it's a pretty easy disassemble once you've unscrewed the bottom
cover. There is only one thin, easily broken, two wire connector from the base
to the top, and you just have to be careful opening the two halves and
disconnecting it first.

After that, you will see that the head assembly itself is not held down by
anything except the data ribbon cable that is attached to it. Remove it first
before proceeding.

You can then pickup the entire assembly. Under it, on the three support posts,
will be three foam washer. if they fall out, that's where they go.

The laser head assembly was taped with metal tape on mine on one end, but I
don't think it does anything. Mine has been cut open the last time i was
cleaning it out, and it doesn't affect the drive as far as I can see.

There are two screws on the laser head assembly cover. Use a 1.0mm flat head
screwdriver to remove them (the smallest one in most cheap jewelers screwdriver
sets; 1.8mm used for the bottom cover earlier). Then, carefully lift and hinge
it open, with the hinge formed where the tape it at. You can then remove the
cover and put it aside.

Now that the cover is off, you can see all of the parts you need to fix the
problem. The two rails on visible, one on each side of the laser optics. You
will want to clean, then lubricate both.

The black gear right next to & closest to the rectangular motor (it is next to
the screw drive rail, not the smooth drive rail) can be rotated by hand to move
the laser head all the way up and down the rails to fully coat the rails evenly
with lubricant.

do this two or three times by hand, then reassemble.

---

now, once you've got it hooked to the PC, run www.ahead.de CDSpeed 2000.

Use a custom test, select RANDOM SEEK test, put in a disc, and let the program
run several times. This will force the head to move about a lot, and it will
help disperse the lubricant evenly.

---

Finally, test with a CD burning software to make sure you can write a full
650/700MB CD properly at full speed, verified afterwards, without any problems.
www.ahead.de Nero can do both write and verify - other CD burn programs may
not have verify at all.
