Yeah, I was going to do a followup - pasting in the text window works fine, pasting into the cast creates a bitmap.
Just tried it now from the terminal (I pine my mail baby) and it works as of old...my first thought was perhaps it was the quartz graphics doing it rather than word - all text maybe being rendered - but it seems Word-centric.
